The Group Chat
Mom Friend (or Foe)
Welcome back to The Group Chat - where we bring listener-submitted moments to the table and let the group chat do what it does best. No experts, no fixing, just honest takes from people who get it. One rule only: please be kind 🙂
This week’s submission taps into the complicated world of mom friendships and asks the question: how far are we willing to go to protect our kids’ friendships… even when we can’t stand the other parent? From forced playdates to fake laughing through coffee dates, we’re getting into the pressure moms feel to “play nice” for the sake of their children and whether it’s possible to set boundaries without making things awkward for everyone involved.
”Okay, I need to know if I’m alone in this because I genuinely feel like I’m living in a social experiment. My daughter has a best friend she absolutely adores. The only problem is I cannot stand the mom 😭. Nothing big happened, we just do NOT vibe. Every playdate somehow turns into a three-hour hangout where I’m trapped making small talk with someone who drains me mentally/emotionally.
The worst part is I feel completely stuck because our daughters are obsessed with each other. I would never want my personal feelings to affect her friendship, especially because she’s so happy and comfortable with this little girl. So now I’m out here forcing myself into coffee dates, playground hangs, and awkward texting just to keep the peace. I need to know the rules here!!! Are moms supposed to become friends too? Can I quietly tolerate her for the next ten years? Or is there a way to create boundaries without accidentally making things weird for the kids? Because right now I deserve an Oscar for the amount of fake laughing I’m doing.”

These stories are all listener-submitted and shared anonymously, because sometimes you just need perspective from people who get it. The group chat is always open.
